‘architecture is nothing but frozen music’ – goethe

Our Mission

The mission of LOFI is to keep independent art & cinema alive within the community (the local community of New York City as well as the global community of independent artists).  We recognize that in the 21stcentury, technology has empowered people in an unprecedented way to make new kinds of film and other forms of media.  However, with media-making becoming increasingly isolated processes, many of the works created by these artists are screened only on websites like YouTube, and the social/community aspect has disappeared from the equation.  We aim to provide a home for this new generation of renegade artists to screen their work; to create, curate and commission new work; and to give community youth the tools to create their own films and other forms of creative media.

Our future plans include providing a safe brick-and-mortar space for filmmakers and other media artists to screen their finished works and works-in-progress, as well as holding monthly curated screenings and special events throughout the year.  Through screenings, exhibitions, discussions and workshops we will challenge and inspire each other and other artists to create new work.  We believe that the best way to learn about media is to make media, and to that end we plan to hold workshops for community youth on media literacy and media-making. We will acquire filmmaking and editing equipment, which we’ll use to provide the community with a positive creative outlet.  We will also provide the equipment to the community at a low cost.  We will partner with other organizations to bring screening, producing and distribution opportunities to independent filmmakers and media artists.  We hope to soon find a space to work out of while pursuing the goal of finding a permanent home for LOFI.

In the coming months, lo-fi lounge will produce RE/Mixed Media Festival 2010, an event bringing together filmmakers, visual artists, designers video remixers and mashup artists to display their works publicly.  It will take place at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn, NY on May 30, 2010.
