It’s officially RE/Mixed Weekend! I wanted to quickly let you know about a last minute panelist who will be joining Moby, Christopher Weingarten, Seth Carnes, Elisa Kreisinger, Kait Kerrigan and Kenneth Hung on the 3:45 ‘Artists Only’ panel on Sunday. We are thrilled that Anita Ondine of The Workbook Project will be joining us. Here’s a little more about her:

Anita Ondine is a writer, producer, intellectual property lawyer and activist. When Anita wrote her legal thesis ‘Lex Cybertoria’ about copyright on the internet over a decade ago it was one of the first papers calling for copyright reform in the digital age. Anita subsequently worked as an IP lawyer providing cutting edge advice to several major multinational corporations, including Reuters and Lehman Brothers, where Anita was Senior Vice President. Anita then returned to her artistic roots and is now fully immersed in innovative content creation through her transmedia production company Seize the Media, in partnership with Lance Weiler.

I also wanted to remind you that, gods and goddesses willing, we will be live streaming the event at: www.remixedmedia.org/live, starting at 2:30 PM EST. I say gods willing because we ran into a snafu or two with our equipment earlier this week, and have been unable to run a test, so we’re flying by the seat of our pants, without a net, and all that. The festival is only a few days away, and we’re looking for questions from you, our internet audience, to ask the panelists at the 3:45 (EST) “Artists Only” panel discussion moderated by Deanna Zandt.   The theme of the panel is creative appropriation, remix and copyright reform and the panelists will include: Elisa Kreisinger, Seth Carnes, Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung, Kait Kerrigan & Brian Lowdermilk, Christopher Weingarten, and Moby, who recently launched a website to provide his tracks free to independent filmmakers.

What a great way to start the week.  Today we are officially announcing the participation of 2 major players in the world of remix and free culture:  Moby and Elizabeth Stark.

Moby is an American DJ, singer-songwriter, and musician. He sings and plays keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and drums. Moby became a successful artist on the ambient electronica scene, and achieved eight top 40 singles in the UK during the 1990s. In 1999 he released the album Play, a mix of melancholic chill-out, ambient music, and upbeat electronica, that was critically acclaimed and produced an impressive eight hit singles (including his most popular songs “Porcelain”, “Natural Blues” and “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?”). Play became a commercial and cultural phenomenon, selling over 10 million copies worldwide[2] (the best-selling electronica album ever) and with its eighteen songs receiving an unprecedented licensing in films, television and commercial advertisements. He recently launched mobygratis.com, a site that offers his tracks for free to independent filmmakers. Moby will not be performing, but will participate in the Artists Only Panel Discussion at 3:45.

Elizabeth Stark is a leader in the global free culture movement. She is a Visiting Fellow at the Yale Information Society Project and a Lecturer in Computer Science at Yale University. Elizabeth is a co-founder of the Open Video Alliance, and producer of the Open Video Conference, whose inaugural event garnered nearly 9000 participants in person and across the web. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Stark founded the Harvard Free Culture Group and served on the board of directors of Students for Free Culture. While at Harvard, she was Editor-at-Large of the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology, and worked with the Harvard Advocates for Human Rights to make better use of new media to promote human rights. Elizabeth spent years researching for the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard, and has taught courses ranging from Cyberlaw to Intellectual Property to Technology & Politics to Electronic Music. Elizabeth regularly gives talks around the world on free culture, and has collaborated with myriad organizations on promoting shared knowledge and the open web. Elizabeth has lived and worked in Berlin, Singapore, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro, and speaks French, German, and Portuguese.

Elizabeth will be doing a presentation on Content ID, Remix, and Downfall Memes with Kenyatta Chesse of knowyourmeme.com.

The Open Video Alliance is now accepting proposals for panels, presentations, workshop sessions, demo sessions, and other programming for the next Open Video Conference in New York City, this October 1-2. Join us and over 1000 participants during our groundbreaking two-day conference and take part in the discussions that are driving the future of the online video medium.

This year, OVC is expanding. In addition to highlighting the industry’s progress toward HTML5 and open video, OVC2010 will feature inspiring talks, hands-on workshops, technology working groups, film screenings, and much more. It’s as much about the underlying technologies as the people and projects who use them.

It’s always a pleasure to announce new news about the festival, and today our fashion curator, Elizabeth Pulos, has revealed the core lineup for the RE/Mixed Fashion Show that will take place at 11PM on the night of the fest.   It’s going to be 30 minutes of remixed fashion insanity, Featuring designs from Arthur Arbit, Jojo Monson and Katie McKay with projections by Rachel Blackwell and beats by Karl Marx.  This is one of the not-to-be missed events of the festival, and will be followed by DJ c-tor and Dan Winckler (live visuals) closing out the night with a mad remix dance party. Following are the bios of the fashion artists appearing in the festival:

Arthur Arbit is a NYC based designer, and the creator of Williamsburg Fashion Weekend

Rachel Blackwell is a video and collage artist in New York City. She sorts through the visual flotsam and jetsam in our 2D and cyber world. Then the re-mix starts; colors are enhanced or muted, figures are taken from their homes and placed in new landscapes. Everything is chopped up and reordered to expose a hidden point. This point is a new home for the artist and viewer to call their own.

Karl Marx (karlmarxbeats.com) would like to borrow $40 until Monday.

JoJo Monson (monsondesigns.com) is a multi-media artist, designer and performer located in New York City. She specializes in exotic costuming and graphic design, bridging the gap between corporation and creativity. Her work has been called remarkable, renaissance, referencing intuitive influences from her wide travels and unique job experience. Her portfolio includes everything from children’s illustration for Colorado and California based companies, to digital and motion design for one of New York’s top advertising companies, to a 15th century Persian wedding gown in Cairo, to toy prototyping for the Denver Art Museum, to costume and concept design for the New York Circus Arts Academy. She is a skilled printmaker, leather worker, henna artist, teacher and storyteller. Her work is strikingly unique, versatile and accessible to all those with an eye for the wild.

Elizabeth Pulos is a Canadian girl living in Brooklyn. She likes clothes, cats and telling people what to do.

RE/Mixed Media Festival 2010 is less than four weeks away, and high time we released the schedule for the day which we’ve been poring over and tweaking endlessly for the past couple of months.  Admittedly, it’s a long day and there’s a TON of stuff to see/hear.  We certainly don’t expect people to come for the whole thing (although you’re more than welcome to!) so advise picking and choosing carefully the things you’d like to attend.  We’ve tried to group the events in a logical way with films and panels in the first half, building into an evening of music, lights, sounds and madness.  Keep in mind that there are LOTS of other things to do, places to eat, and things to see in DUMBO, so don’t worry if things you’d like to see aren’t exactly contiguous.

4:30 Film: Man With a Movie Camera, The Global Remake an interactive remix project that invites participation in a mashup of a 1929 film belonging to world cultural history. The work has been presented in 30 venues to date. It won Honorary Mention in the Digital Communities category at Ars Electronica ’08, was presented at Transmediale ’09, File ’09, Media Forum at Moscow International Film Festival ’09, at the Montreal Biennial ’09, has been installed in museums and galleries worldwide -at Shang Elements Museum Beijing, Ueno Town Art Museum Tokyo, Pera Museum Istanbul amongst others, and screened on public LED displays in Manchester, Leeds, Norwich and Sheffield UK, Federation Square Melbourne Australia, e4c Seattle U.S.A.  The film will be followed by a Q & A with the artist, Perry Bard.

6:00 World Famous Ricky Powell Slide Show - Ricky is best known as Def Jam’s unofficial chronicler and famously as the alleged fourth Beastie Boy during the group’s Licensed to Ill and Paul’s Boutique era.  In his slide show, Ricky will focus on photo/graffiti mashups he made in collaboration with some of the world’s best known graffiti artists.

6:30 Film: Joseph Cornell’s Rose Hobart – A re-enactment of its original 1936 screening.

7:30 Extending Game Culture – Moderated by Josephine Dorado; with Michael Nitsche, Jesper Juul, Bit Shifter, Ill Clan. There’s more to game culture than playing games. Innovations within the game industry and the gamer community have sparked emergent forms of expression as well as an impressive amount of creative interaction and engagement. From the release of tools to make user-created content such as custom avatars and maps, to the addition of filmmaking tools, a large opening has formed in digital media through which gamers are showing that they are not just passive consumers, but engaged media makers.

8:15 Hobo Tech – a collective of electronic musicians in search of Lost America. Fueled by the independent spirit of America’s legendary Hobos, these artists create dance music that flies in the face of bottle-service pretentiousness and glorifies endless railroad adventure, half-smoked cigars and steaming cauldrons of stew.

8:45 1st Annual RE/Mixed Media Festival remix competition screenings – Robert Dohrmann, Matt Daly, Diran Lyons, Willam Scurry Jr., Fort/Da, Rachel Blackwell, Lili White, Ashleigh Nankivell, Adrian Romero. Videos will be judged by a panel of experts, and the winner will receive $500 cash prize at the end of the night.

9:45 Sweatshoppe - a new multimedia performance collaboration between Bruno Levy and Blake Shaw that works at the intersection of art, music and technology. The duo develops software to construct a totally unique interactive performance, and creates unique ways of affecting an audience. Whether it be as a dance driven electronic music performance that emphasizes sound reactive visuals, building interactive installations, or the fabrication of guerrilla technologies to augment public space, the duo strives towards an element of pop accessibility that is so often ignored in the technocentric world of experimental media.

10:15 Steinski - a renowned remixer since the early 1980’s. Starting in 1983, he co-produced, with his partner Double-Dee, the series of records known as The Lessons: analog tape cut-and-paste collages, still widely bootlegged (and wildly illegal). These records are generally acknowledged as three of the most influential works in the world of hip-hop and dance music production, and cited as definitive influences by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, and Fatboy Slim, among others. As a solo producer, he crafted The Motorcade Sped On, turning historic broadcasts of the Kennedy assassination into a hip-hop record, and has composed and produced dozens of soundtracks for various TV & radio commercials and industrial films.

11:00 Remixed Fashion Show – What is remixed fashion?   Can remix be used by designers to create new looks?  This is a question artist Elizabeth Pulos aims to tackle with the Remixed Fashion Show, which will feature the most creative mashed up looks we can find.  Don’t miss this event – it’s sure to be a highlight of the festival!

Roots of Remix: A video installation that takes visitors through the history of remix/mashup – demonstrating that, far from being a new phenomenon, remix has been with us for centuries.

Silent Art Auction: The concept of remix is nothing new in the world of art.  Artists as diverse as Duchamp, Rauschenberg, Warhol and Lichtenstein have all used cultural icons and found objects to comment on the society that produced them.  The festival will feature an exhibition of painters, photographers and collage artists who we feel represent remix culture. All works will be available via silent auction to benefit RE/Mixed Media and the League of Independents.

Sponsor Tables: Several of LOFI’s friends, supporters and collaborators – including Open Video Alliance, Organization for Transformative Works, and Public Knowledge – will have tables set up in the balcony.

Lili White / House of The Gentle interprets eight hexagrams from the classic text oracle of the I Ching, or Chinese Book of Changes, thru gestural performances set in Nature, Chaco Canyon, and Shofuso, the Japanese House & Garden in Philadelphia.
Lili White performs in Nature’s stage set; her form suggests a bodily connection to a dream logic—that is no logic—no answers posited to –?–— What was the question?
The form derived from authentic movement, a technique of improvisational movement practice that allows its participants a type of free association of the body, started by Mary Starks Whitehouse in the 1950s as “movement in depth”. Perception was the ultimate theme…
Regarding the East’s treatment of landscape:
“…Nature as a reflection of consciousness: eschewing traditional Western schemes of landscape as monumental & eternal…the East’s (view is) the notion of landscape as ephemeral form and infinite process, like Chinese landscapes (that) achieve a dynamism to suggest something numinous and wonderous beyond eternal form.”

The I Ching is a “reflection of the universe in miniature.” Its hexagrams represent descriptions of certain states or processes, using the essences found in Nature as the basis for its descriptions. There are a total of sixty-four different yet archetypal forms of energy described. The “gentle” refers to wood or the wind, both are gentle yet penetrating powers.

Versailles in the Sky by Sabine Mohr is a luminous painting of an aerial plan of Versailles, the palace estate of Louis the Fourteenth. When flashed with a light source the painting will glow in the dark. Created originally for the show LAST CALL last October at Le Petit Versailles and now finally to be exhibited this year.

The Pavilion of Realism is an international exhibition inspired by a similarly titled exhibition organized by Realist painter Gustave Courbet. Courbet’s pavilion was a direct response to the rejection of one of his works from the 1855 Paris Universal Expo. The Pavilion of Realism updates the political tension between the Universal Expo and Courbet’s pavilion within the context of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Like the official French salons of the 18th and 19th centuries where art was censored because it engaged politics, countries participating in the 2010 World Expo will promote nationhood via culture and art; yet what will be displayed will likely not explore the most pressing issues affecting the global community today. In contrast and in spirit with Courbet’s oppositional exhibition, The Pavilion of Realism will present challenging art that addresses social and political problems with “realism” absent in the exhibiting pavilions of the 2010 World Expo.

“现 实主展馆”是一次国际性的展览，展览的题目借用了现实主义画家库尔贝（Gustave Courbet）的同名展。库尔贝的作品被1855年巴黎世博会所拒绝，他的“展馆”就是对此事件的直接回应。而本次展览 则在2010年上海世界博览会的 语境中再次上演了当年库尔贝与巴黎世博会之间的政治对峙。

出于政治因素的考虑，18、19世纪的法国官方沙龙要对参展作品进行严格审查，而本次参加2010年世博会的国家则试图借助文化、艺 术来强调自己的民族 性，但本次展览并不打算探讨那些影响当今世界的棘手问题。相反，本次展览将秉承库尔贝的反抗精神，用艺术的方式呈现与“现实主义”有 关的社会、政治问题， 从而弥补了2010年上海世博会在这方面的缺席。
